The 1953-1954 Dixon High Boys “A” Basketball Team stands as one of the most accomplished and legendary squads in the school's history. Under the leadership of Hall of Fame Coach Archie Yelle, this extraordinary group of athletes brought statewide recognition to Dixon High School, combining grit, teamwork, and championship drive to deliver a season for the ages.

The team finished with an outstanding 17-2 record, earning the title of YCAL Champions. Their only two losses came by a total of just three points — a testament to their consistency and competitive edge. After dropping a heartbreaker to Clarksburg by one point in their first league game, the Rams refocused and redoubled their effort, committing to a tougher, more disciplined style of basketball. Their strategy centered around dominant center Farrell Funston, whose skill, strength, and scoring ability made him nearly unstoppable. Funston, later named California State Basketball Player of the Year and California Athlete of the Year (1954), scored almost as many points as the rest of the team combined.

The season was defined not only by victories but by milestones. This squad was the first Dixon High basketball team to compete on the new portable basketball floor installed at Madden Hall on the Dixon Fairgrounds. Players quickly learned the court's quirks — the hard and soft spots — and turned them into home-court advantage. Their mastery of fundamentals and relentless teamwork carried them to the top of California's small-school ranks.

Recognized by Cal-Hi Sports as the No. 1 small-school basketball team in the entire state and the greater Sacramento area, the 1953-1954 team brought unprecedented prestige to Dixon. They also became local celebrities when they appeared on a Sacramento television sports program, proudly representing their town as each player was introduced on air — a first in school history.

Led by Hall of Famers Coach Yelle, Farrell Funston and Lonnie Cagle, this remarkable group embodied the best of Dixon athletics: dedication, teamwork, and the determination to succeed. Their legacy is one of excellence and community pride — a story of how a small-town team rose to become California's best.

The 1953-1954 Dixon High Boys “A” Basketball Team remains a shining example of what can be achieved when talent, coaching, and heart come together in pursuit of greatness.
